New Year Event at Yokosuka Port Market

Updated: 9 hours ago

After an extremely busy period, I finally have a little time to reflect.

Although it was already last month, I had the pleasure of giving a New Year’s concert at my hometown venue, Yokosuka Port Market. In Japan, the New Year immediately brings to mind Haru no Umi, so I performed that piece, along with Senbonzakura, which one of my students had been eager to play. It was a joyful program, and I was grateful to explore such varied repertoire.

I was invited by Yokosuka City Support, who have kindly supported me for many years. It was wonderful to reunite with Mr. Chijiwa after some time, and I had the pleasure of collaborating for the first time with koto player Ms. Kamata, whom he introduced.

The 25-string koto was truly impressive—just looking at that many strings made my head spin.

Even though I now live far away, I am deeply grateful to continue receiving opportunities to perform in my hometown of Yokosuka.

A friend from my high school wind band came after seeing the flyer, and some YMSA audience members also attended and kindly spoke to me. It was a moment that reminded me how strong the local spirit is.

I have often heard that people from the Miura Peninsula have a strong sense of local pride. Perhaps it is because it lies in the south? Or because it has such a distinctive character? It is not overwhelmingly large, yet not particularly small either. With its sea, sunshine, nature, and town life, the Miura Peninsula truly is a wonderful place.
